Logica Launches Service Design Lab on Madeira Island
On May 24, 2010, the industrial partner of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program Logica Iberica, business and technology Service Company, launched the Service Design Lab in Madeira. This lab has two key-components: Innovative Services Design and Scientific Research for the quality of Services Design.
The Service Design Logica Lab is a partnership between Lab:USE (Laboratory for Usage-centered Software Engineering), Mathematics and Engineering Department of the Universidade da Madeira, Madeira Tecnopolo, and the company Logica Iberica. José Carlos Gonçalves, CEO of Logica Iberica, said that “the Universidade da Madeira has made a big investment on the design area which is a result of the partnership with the Carnegie Mellon University, and we [Logica Iberica] saw the opportunity to become partners and to create new jobs.”
“In this partnership,” Gonçalves added, “our company will give human resources and technological equipment, and the Universidade da Madeira will provide the researchers to coordinate our experts and projects.” The lab also involves two alumni of the Program’s professional masters in Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI), who are working on developing services for Logica, and two Ph.D. students, who are focusing on design research for services. The lab will also involve synergies with the SINAIS project, developed under the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program. Logica Iberica is developing projects in the Energy and Telecommunication sectors, with particular focus on information about rates and invoices to the final consumer.
In attendance at the ceremony to commemorate the launch of the lab were João Cunha e Silva, vice president of the Regional Government of Madeira Island, Castanheira da Costa, rector of the Universidade da Madeira, Nuno Nunes, president of the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute and scientific director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program, and Raul Caires, president of the Madeira Tecnopolo. The principal investigator of the Logica Lab Service Design is Monchu Chen.
