Jonathan Aldrich is an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science, where he also directs the software engineering minor. His areas of research interest focus on programming languages and software engineering research that develops better ways of expressing and enforcing software design within source code, typically through language design and type systems. Specific projects have involved object-oriented typestate verification, modular reasoning techniques for aspects and stateful programs, and new object-oriented language models. He teaches courses in emerging programming paradigms, analysis of software artifacts, and the Software Engineering Practicum.

He holds a B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science (Computer Science) from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and an M.S. and Ph.D from the University of Washington in Computer Science and Engineering.

Dr. Aubry is the Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Her awards include the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and her election as Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). She has served as Past Chair (currently), Chair, Vice Chair and Member-at-Large of the U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) under the auspices of the National Academies. She is also a member of the Congress Committee of the International Union for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and was appointed Chair of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) delegation to the IUTAM General Assembly (2008-2009). Dr. Aubry has been serving on many APS and ASME committees, numerous NSF and National Research Council review panels, and a certain number of international boards and review panels at foreign institutions (particularly in Europe and Asia). She currently serves as Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics and is a member of the Editorial Board of Mechanics Research Communications (Elsevier). She has given numerous invited seminars on her research at various universities and conferences. Recent lectures include a keynote lecture at the SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (2003), a conference invited lecture at the Annual Meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics (American Physical Society) (2006), the Grace Hopper Lecture at the University of Pennsylvania (2007), the Haythornthwaite Foundations’ Distinguished Lecture at Temple University (2008), and the Lindseth Lecture at Cornell University (2008).

Vijayakumar Bhagavatula is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests are primarily within Pattern Recognition for Biomerics and Coding and Signal Processing for Data Storage.

He holds a B.Tech and an M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

Alan W Black is an Associate Research Professor in the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He previously worked in the Centre for Speech Technology Research at the University of Edinburgh, and before that at ATR in Japan. He is one of the principal authors of the Festival Speech Synthesis System, the FestVox voice building tools and CMU Flite, and small speech synthesis engine. He is also Chief Scientist and co-founder of the for-profit company Cepstral, LLC.

Serguey Braguinsky is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences. His current research is in the field of economics of innovation, entrepreneurship and growth, especially from the firm and industry-level perspective (although some macroeconomic aspects of growth as well). He is also interested in economics of development and institutions, including but not limited to property rights, rent seeking and corruption and their effects on the allocation of human capital.

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Keio University, Tokyo.

Lee Branstetter has research interests in the areas of international economics, the economics of technological innovation, industrial organization, East Asian economic growth, and the Japanese economy. He is a highly cited expert on international economics and the economics of innovation. Prior to his appointment at Carnegie Mellon, Branstetter was the Daniel Stanton Associate Professor of Business and Director of the International Business Program at Columbia Business School. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.

Tsuhan Chen is professor and associate head for Carnegie Mellon’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also co-director of its Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Lab. His areas of research lie in signals/controls with focus on multimedia coding and streaming, computer vision, pattern recognition, computer graphics, and multimodal biometrics.

He holds M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in Electrical Engineering, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the National Taiwan University.

Nicolas Christin is the Associate Director of the Information Networking Institute, where he also serves as a faculty member. He is in addition a CyLab Systems Scientist, and a faculty advisor for a number of technical masters programs. He spends much of his time in the CyLab’s research and education center in Japan, CyLab Japan, located in Kōbe.

Christin’s research interests are in computer and information systems networks; most of his work is at the boundary of systems and policy research, with a definitive slant toward security aspects. He focuses on network security and its economics, security and psychology, incentive-compatible network topology design, and information flow security.

He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Virginia, and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur from École Centrale de Lille.

She is also Chief Scientist of Wombat Security Technologies, Inc. She has authored over 80 research papers on online privacy, phishing and semantic attacks, spam, electronic voting, anonymous publishing, usable access control, and other topics. She has played a key role in building the usable privacy and security research community, having co-edited the seminal book Security and Usability (O'Reilly 2005) and founded the Symposium On Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS). She also chaired the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) Specification Working Group at the W3C and authored the book Web Privacy with P3P (O'Reilly 2002). She has served on a number of boards, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation Board of Directors, and on the editorial boards of several journals. In 2003 she was named one of the top 100 innovators 35 or younger by Technology Review magazine. She was previously a researcher at AT&T-Labs Research and taught in the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Fernando De la Torre is an Assistant Research Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor at La Salle School of Engineering’s Department of Telecommunications and Signal Theory, where he received his B.Sc. in Telecommunications and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering. He teaches Linear Algebra, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Telecommunications, and Calculus. Torre’s research interests include Statistical Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Vision, Facial Analysis (face tracking, recognition, facial expression analysis), and Behavioral Modeling. He is currently working on research projects at Carnegie Mellon’s Human Sensing Laboratory and Component Analysis Laboratory.

Jenna Date is the Director for the Master program in the Human Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. As the director, Date works with faculty, staff, students and alumni in providing a rewarding experience for each incoming class of students.

Prior to becoming the director for MHCI, Date co-founded Fit Associates, LLC. One of Fit’s purposes is to lead and equip conscious clients in common goods. Date was deeply involved working with various teams such as marketing, engineering and design to develop and build her expertise in workshop facilitation, ethnographic research and many more.

Anind Dey is an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute. His research interests include the Feedback/intelligibility and control in ubiquitous computing, context-aware computing, toolkits and end-user programming environments, sensor-rich environments, information overload, ambient displays, privacy, human-computer interaction, and machine learning. Some of Professor Dey’s current projects include: intelligibility and control in context-aware computing, persuasive and self-reflective interfaces, modeling and predicting human behavior, usability and improved performance in active learning, creating salient summaries of experiences to diagnose and support memory issues, learning routines and detecting deviations to support dual-income families, augmented reality interfaces, and programming support for context-aware and sensor-rich environments (toolkits and programming environments).

He holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada, an M.S. in AeroSpace Engineering from Georgia Tech, and an M.S. and Ph.D in Computer Science from Georgia Tech.

Dr. Eskenazi is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Language Technologies Institute of the School of Computer Science of Carnegie Mellon University. She received her B.A. in Modern Languages and Education from Carnegie Mellon University in 1973 and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics and Computer Science from the University of Paris in 1981 and 1984. She has published over 60 papers in the area of speech recognition and modern language pedagogy. In addition to the many research appoints in both Europe and the United States, she served as the Head of Assessment and Variability in the Speech Group at the LIMSI laboratory from 1984 to 1994. Dr. Eskenazi has worked on several consulting assignments ranging from technology development to speech curriculum development for various scientific and linguistic organizations. She leads the technology and curriculum development of Carnegie Speech products and services. And she is the chair of the ISCA SLaTE Special Interest Group on Speech and Language Technologies for Education.

Shelley Evenson is an Associate Proffessor in the School of Design, where is also the director of graduate studies. She teaches in the area of interaction and service design, including Designing for Service, Introduction to Interaction & Visual Interface, and Graduate Design Studio courses. Her interests include design languages and strategies, design prototyping, organizational interfaces, service design, and what lies beyond user-centered design.

Irene Fonseca’s areas of research interests lie in the areas of continuum mechanics, calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations. Recent work has been focused on the search for effective or relaxed energies, and on the study of existence, regularity, oscillatory and hysteretic behavior of solutions of (non convex) variational problems associated with materials instabilities, phase transitions, plasticity, nucleation and growth of phases, fracture, and defects in solids. She focuses on the analysis of mathematical models for computer vision and imaging, as well as for novel man-made materials such as shape memory alloys, ferroelectric, magnetic and magnetostrictive materials, composites, liquid crystals, and thin films.

She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

Robert Frederking is a Senior Systems Scientist (research faculty) at the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is also chair of the LTI’s graduate programs. He is currently working on projects in speech translation and other language technologies. Among his many research projects, he led the DIPLOMAT project, which combined Carnegie Mellon’s research in rapid-deployment machine translation (MT), speech, and wearable computers to produce a wearable speech-to-speech translator that could be adapted quickly to new languages.

His research interests include natural language, knowledge representation and reasoning, and the foundations of artificial intelligence. He is also interested in the design and implementation of software for portable applications, and issues of real field use versus laboratory demonstrations.

Frederking holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence from Carnegie Mellon, and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the Case Western Reserve University.

Erica Fuchs is interested in the geography of design, international technology and operations management, and innovation and industrial policy. She currently has two main streams of research. Her first stream of research looks at the impact of manufacturing offshore on the technology development path of the firm and the industry. Here, she has studied two cases of emerging technologies . advanced composites in automobiles and integration in optoelectronic components. In both cases, her results show that when U.S. firms shift production from the U.S. to countries like China, often the most advanced technologies that were developed here no longer pay. Factor costs are different abroad, and earlier technologies can be more cost-effective in countries like China. Among other issues, this leaves the most advanced technologies abandoned, and, in the case of the optoelectronics industry, creates a barrier to ever returning production to the U.S. Fuchs’ second area of research focus studies the social processes influencing technology trajectories. Here, she is once again studying information technology, in particular, microprocessors. This work currently focuses on two main areas — the coordination of innovation among key industry architects, and the processes by which the government seeds and encourages new technology trajectories within this framework.

She holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Systems, an S.M. in Technology Policy, and an S.B. n Materials Science and Engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Rajeev Ghandi is a professor within Carnegie Mellon’s Electrical and Computer Engineering department as well as CM’s Information Networking Institute. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, Professor Ghandi served as a Research Staff Member for Motorola’s Broadband Communications Division in San Diego, Ca, where he was involved in the H.264 video-compression standardization activity. During that period, he received Motorola’s Outstanding Performance award in 2002 in recognition of his contributions to global standardization activities. His research interests span wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, signal processing and security. He has also recently become interested in the application of statistical techniques and machine-learning algorithms to computer system problems, particularly in the area of failure diagnosis. David Garlan is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he leads several research projects and is the Director of Professional Software Engineering Programs. His research interests include software architecture, pervasive computing, self-healing systems, applied formal methods, and software development environments. He is a member of the Computer Science Department and the Institute for Software Research International in the School of Computer Science.

Virgil Gligor is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests include network and distributed systems security, distributed systems and applied cryptography.

James Hoe is an Associate Professor, and Associate Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Hoe has research interests in many aspects of computer architecture and digital design such as soft-error tolerant processors and systems, high level synthesis and optimization of DSP hardware, and architectural simulation and prototyping methodologies.

Professor Hoe is affiliated with CALCM, CSSI and CyLab, he directs the ITRI Lab@CMU and the OpenSPARC Center of Excellence at Carnegie Mellon. He is also the general co-chair for ASPLOS 2010 effective next March.

Hoe received his Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and M.Sc. degree, from the University of California, Berkeley, both degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

David Hounshell’s areas of research interest focus on technological and organizational innovation, technology policy, industrial research and development, university-industry relationships, regional economic development, history of science, technology, business, and engineering. Hounshell studies innovation at the intersection of science, technology, and industry. His work includes extensive studies of industrial research and development, the development of manufacturing technology in the United States, and the role of independent inventors and entrepreneurs in the development of technology.

He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Delaware and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Southern Methodist University.

Marija Ilić holds a joint appointment at Carnegie Mellon as Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Engineering & Public Policy, where she has been a tenured faculty member since October 2002. Her principal fields of interest include electric power systems modeling; design of monitoring, control, and pricing algorithms for electric power systems; normal and emergency control of electric power systems; control of large scale dynamic systems; nonlinear network and systems theory; modeling and control of economic and technical interactions in dynamical systems with applications to competitive energy systems.

Ilić received her M.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees in Systems Science and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis and earned her MEE and Dip. Ing. at the University of Belgrade. She is an IEEE Fellow and an IEEE distinguished lecturer, as well as a recipient of the First Presidential Young Investigator Award for Power Systems.

Takeo Kanade is the U.A. and Helen Whitaker University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University as well as Director of the Quality of Life Technology Center. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Kyoto University, where he also served on the faculty of the Department of Information Science from 1974-1980. At Carnegie Mellon, Kanade has held positions as Senior Research Scientist (1980-1982), Associate Professor (1982-1985), Professor (1985-present), and Director of the Robotics Institute (1992-2001). He has also served as the Director of the Digital Human Research Center, AIST, Tokyo since 2001. Kanade’s research interests include stereo vision, quality of life technology, mobile robots, medical applications, human-computer interaction, computer vision, and computational sensors.

Pradeep Khosla is the Dean of Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering. He holds the Phillip and Marsha Dowd Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE); he is a professor in The Robotics Institute, and is co-director of CyLab. He serves on ICTI's Board of Directors.

His research interests focus on sensor-based manipulator control, real-time architectures for control, design for assembly, methodologies for manipulator design, and applications of robotics in assembly and manufacturing.

He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both from Carnegie Mellon, and a B.Tech. with honors from the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology).

Hyong Kim’s research interests include Scalable QoS Switch Architecture Design and implementation of scalable switch architectures for large networks with varying quality of service. In addition to performance design metrics, implementation metrics such as power, space, and cost effectiveness are explored in the design of switch architectures. Other research areas include intelligent traffic management, secure and fault-tolerant control plane, management of multi-layer and cross-layer interactions, and optimization of network resources in multi-layer networks.

Kim holds Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Toronto, and a B.Eng. with honors, also in Electrical Engineering, from McGill University.

 David Kinderleher is a Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Kinderleher is currently studying complex features of grain growth and fluctuation driven transport in soft systems.

Kinderleher received his Ph.D., in Mathematical Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. 

Steven Klepper is involved in two programs of research: one is regarding the evolution of industries beginning with their commercial inception; the second deals with making inferences about unobservable constructs through the use of proxy variables.

He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Bruce H Krogh, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, earned his Ph.D. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1982. He teaches courses in Embedded Control Systems, Signal and Systems, and Linear Systems at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (http://www.ece.cmu.edu/). Krogh’s research interests are hybrid dynamic systems, formal methods for verification, control systems, model-based design, sensor networks, and energy systems. She has a B.A. in English Literature from Seton Hill University and a Master’s in Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon.

Granger Morgan is Carnegie Mellon’s Lord Chair Professor of Engineering; as a professor and department head of Engineering and Public Policy as well as a professor within the Electrical and Computer Engineering department and within the Heinz College. His research interests are focused on policy problems in which technical and scientific issues play a central role. Methodological interests include problems in the integrated analysis of large complex systems; problems in the characterization and treatment of uncertainty; problems in the improvement of regulation; and selected issues in risk analysis and risk communication. Application areas of current interest include global climate change; the future of the energy system, especially electric power; risk analysis including risk ranking; health and environmental impacts of energy systems; security aspects of engineered civil systems; national R&D policy; radio interference on commercial airliners; issues of privacy and anonymity; and a number of general policy, management, and manpower problems involving science and technology.

He holds a B.A. in physics from Harvard College, an M.S. in astronomy and space science from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in applied physics and information science from the University of California, San Diego.

José Moura is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also holds a courtesy appointment to the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He teaches a range of ECE courses, including Algebraic Signal Processing; Applied Stochastic Processes; Estimation, Detection and Identification; Signals and Systems; and Mathematical Foundations of Electrical Engineering.

Moura’s areas of research interest include statistical signal and image processing. His work in statistical theory of shape looks at shape invariants and at the geometry of shape space. He is also working in the new area of network science, with particular emphasis on distributed decision and inference in sensor networks. His current research projects focus on the detection performance of distributed wireless sensor networks, robust detection and imaging by time reversal, bioimaging, and image/video processing.

He is Founder and Director of the and Project Leader, SPIRAL.

Moura holds a D.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and an MSc and an EE in Electrical Engineering, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as a Licenciatura em Engenharia Electrotécnica from the Instituto Superior Técnico.

Tamal Mukherjee’s areas of interest include design automation for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), which enable the integration of sensors and actuators onto the same chip, processing the information in a digital manner to generate complete systems on a chip. His research group is developing a complete design methodology for integrated MEMS that includes lumped-parameter reusable models to speed up the design iteration, numerical algorithms for generating MEMS designs from engineering specifications and geometric algorithms for MEMS extraction. He is also interested in design automation for microfluidics-based bio-chips.

Mukherjee holds Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

Prof. Priya Narasimhan is an Associate Professor with the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, and Director of the CyLab Mobility Research Center, at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests lie in the fields of dependable distributed systems, embedded systems and mobile systems. Her research has earned her a Alfred Sloan Fellowship, the 2009 Carnegie Science Center's Emerging Female Scientist Award, an NSF CAREER Award, a Best Paper Award, the 2001 UCSB Lancaster Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award and two IBM Faculty Partnership Awards. She teaches the introductory embedded real-time systems course (18-349) and the capstone embedded-systems design course (18-549). Her teaching has earned her the 2008 Eta Kappa Nu (Carnegie Mellon Sigma Chapter) Excellence in Teaching Award.

She is the President and Founder of YinzCam, Inc., a company focused on mobile live streaming and experiential technologies for live events. She has also previously served as the Chief Technology Officer and, later, the Vice-President of Engineering of Eternal Systems, Inc., a startup company that commercialized the results of her Ph.D. research to develop and sell 24x7 highly available platforms and solutions. Her research greatly influenced the development of the Fault Tolerant CORBA industrial standard.

Adrian Perrig is a professor within Carnegie Mellon’s Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering and Public Policy as well as Computer Science departments. In addition to serving within three departments, Professor Perrig is also the technical director of Cylab, CM’s Cybersecurity Laboratory, as well as the technical director of the CMU-Taiwan iCast project. His research primarily focuses on human interfaces for security, networking, operating systems, and applied cryptography.

Frank Pfenning is a professor in where he teaches courses in constructive logic and compiler design, among others. His research interests lie in programming languages, logic and type theory, logical frameworks, automated deduction, and trustworthy computing. His current projects include Logosphere (a formal digital library), Triple, type refinement in programming languages, and ConCert, language technology for trustless software dissemination.

He holds an M.S. and a Ph.D., both in Mathematics, from Carnegie Mellon.

Markus Pueschel is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his Diploma (M.Sc.) in Mathematics and his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, in 1995 and 1998, respectively, both from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. From 1998-1999 he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Mathematics and Computer Science, Drexel University. Since 2000 he has been with Carnegie Mellon University. He was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, the IEEE Signal Processing Letters, was a Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE and the Journal of Symbolic Computation, and served on various program committees of conferences in computing, compilers, and programming languages. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon and the Eta Kappa Nu Award for Outstanding Teaching. He also holds the title of Privatdozent at the University of Technology, Vienna, Austria.

His research interests include fast computing, algorithms, applied mathematics, and signal processing theory/software/hardware.

Ragunathan "Raj" Rajkumar is the director of Carnegie Mellon’s Real-Time and Multimedia Systems Lab, as well as the co-director of both the General Motors-Carnegie Mellon Information Technology and the General Motors-Carnegie Mellon Autonomous Driving Collaborative Research Labs. His research interests lie in all aspects of embedded real-time systems and wireless/sensor networks, in which a primary focus of the research is to build practical and functioning systems that can be analyzed or proved to be correct. Some examples of real-time embedded systems include: real-time scheduling and real-time scheduling and synchronization on multi-core processors, model-based design, autonomous driving, automotive systems and power management. And within wireless/sensor networks, activities include: firefly sensor networks, OmniEye Smart Video Surveillance, and Sensor Andrew. He teaches courses in embedded real-time systems, Wireless sensor networks, and distributed systems.

Norman Sadeh directs Carnegie Mellon’s Mobile Commerce Lab and its e-supply chain management lab; he is also co-director of its Ph.D. program in program in Computation, Organizations and Society. His areas of research focus on the areas of supply chain management, planning and scheduling, agent technologies, automated negotiation, workflow management, the semantic web, mobile commerce, pervasive computing, and Internet privacy and security. He is also interested in the broader business, social and policy implications associated with the emerging information society.

Sadeh holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon with a major in Artificial Intelligence and a minor in Operations Research; an M.S. degree in computer science from the University of Southern California, and a BS/MS degree in electrical engineering and applied physics from the Free University of Brussels (Belgium).

Ed Schlesinger is professor in and head of Carnegie Mellon’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His areas of research interest include applied physics, semiconductor devices, information storage, and optoelectronic systems. He directs the DARPA Center for Memory Intensive Self-Configuring Integrated Circuits (MISCIC) at Carnegie Mellon. This Center focuses on the integration of MEMS probes with ICs to produce reconfigurable circuits. Initial efforts are in the use of phase change materials in vias that can be used to make and break electrical connections in devices such as inductors appropriate for RF circuits.

Additional research pursuits by Schlesinger center on the fabrication and modeling of a wide variety of optical devices. Much of this work is aimed at developing advanced read/write heads for optical and heat assisted data storage systems. Projects are centered on the development and detailed understanding of a variety of nanophotonic devices.

Schlesinger holds M.S. and a Ph.D degrees in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Toronto.

Daniel P. Siewiorek, Director Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute, received a BS Electrical Engineering University of Michigan, before then earning both his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He teaches Mobile Computing Systems and Applications (Fall) as well as Rapid Prototyping of Computer Systems (Spring). Siewiorek's research interests include, Wearable Computing, Context-Aware Computing, Fault-tolerant Computing, Reliable Computing, Computer-aided Design, Computer Architecture, Design Automation, and Rapid Prototyping. He is currently involved in research projects such as Aura, Quality of Life Technology, GM, and Wearable computers.

Bruno Sinopoli is an assistant professor within Carnegie Mellon’s Electrical and Computer Engineering department, along with courtesy appointments within the Robotics Institute and the Mechanical Engineering Department. His research interests involve the analysis and design of networked embedded control systems, with applications to sensor actuators networks. Specific topics include: distributed estimation and control over networks, wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks, estimation and detection, random dynamical systems, security of control systems, and energy efficient design of embedded systems. In 2006, Professor Sinopoli was awarded the Eliahu Jury award for outstanding achievement in the area of Systems, Communications, Control, or Signal Processing.

He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Università di Padova, and an M.S. and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Marvin Sirbu received B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering (1966) and Mathematics (1967), an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering (1968) and an Sc.D. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Economics (1973) all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Sirbu remained at MIT as a Research Associate in the Center for Policy Alternatives before joining the faculty of MIT's Sloan School of Management. While at MIT he directed its Research Program in Communications Policy.

In 1985 he moved to Carnegie Mellon University with a joint appointment in Engineering and Public Policy, the Tepper School of Business, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 1989 He founded CMU's Information Networking Institute which engages in interdisciplinary research and education at the intersection of telecommunications, computing, business and policy studies.

Dr. Sirbu spent the 2006-2007 academic year at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Télécommunications

Dejan Slepčev is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Mellon College of Science. His research concerns nonlinear partial differential equations and some of their diverse applications. He is particularly interested in analyzing the mathematical descriptions of a variety of dynamic phenomena, such as behavior of liquids on a small scale, mass transport, and mechanisms that underlie aggregation in biological systems.

 Research interests:

1. Natural language processing: algorithms for linguistically analyzing text, especially language-independent ones
2. Computational linguistics: computational models of language structure and language learning
3. Machine learning: structured prediction, statistical language learning

 Applications: machine translation, question answering, making text useful for social scientists, text-driven forecasting

Daniel D. Stancil is an Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also the Alcoa Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University. His research interests research interests are generally in the areas of applied electromagnetism, solid state physics, and communications. Specific interests include vehicle-to-vehicle communications, wireless signal distribution in buildings, novel radar systems, antenna design, cognitive radio, and optical nanostructures.

He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University , and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Peter Steenkiste is a Professor of Computer Science and of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests are in the areas of networking and distributed computing with a focus on the areas of wireless networking, distributed computing, and pervasive computing. He is also involved in wireless projects in a number of areas, including self-management techniques for residential networks, emulation as a basis for evaluating wireless technologies, and the use of software radios as a platform for flexible, self-optimizing wireless protocols. In the area of distributed computing, he looks at Internet-scale network services that self-configure and self-optimize.

He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and he received the degree of Electrical Engineer from the University of Gent in Belgium.

Ozan K. Tonguz is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests are in telecommunications and networking, specifically within Optical Networks, Wireless Networks, Communication Systems and High Speed Networking.

He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Essex and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University.

Dena Haritos Tsamitis is Director of the Information Networking Institute, where she is responsible for the academic, administrative, and fiscal operations of the INI. She oversees graduate programs in information networking (MSIN), information security technology and management (MSISTM), and information technology (MSIT) at Carnegie Mellon's campus in Pittsburgh, as well as in Silicon Valley, in Athens, Greece, in Kobe, Japan, and in Aveiro and Lisbon, Portugal through hybrid distributed education formats.

She is also an adjunct faculty member in Carnegie Mellon's Heinz College, where she teaches core courses in educational technology and distance learning. She also created a certificate program that leads to the Instructional Technology Specialist Certificate issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, Tsamitis was an Internet Analyst for Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a programmer for USX Engineers and Consultants in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Tsamitis holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science in Education from Duquesne University. She is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education management at the University of Pennsylvania.

Francisco Veloso teaches in the areas of technology policy and management, supply chain decisions, and industrial development. He is interested in the development of technology assets and the role of public policy. Specifically, his work aims at integrating engineering and technology knowledge and methods with economic analysis to study how firms and regions develop technology capabilities. To be able to integrate both dimensions, his work entails both methodology development and problem focus research.

His current work includes a series of studies on how decisions related to technology and innovation (e.g. entry in new technologies, adoption of process improvement methods, or modular product solutions) affect firm performance. This work focuses mostly on the automotive sector and has an important dimension looking at developing and intermediate level economies.

A second and more recent area of research aims at evaluating and comparing technological capabilities of knowledge based industries in developing nations. A current project analyzes the capabilities of the software industry in China, India and Brazil. The methodology development effort of his research has been directed towards the development of a System Cost Model (SCM), a tool to evaluate cost implications of decisions in complex technological systems such as automobiles.

He holds a B.S. in Physics Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico, an M.S. in Technology Management from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, and a Ph.D. in Technology, Management and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Manuela Veloso is the Herbert Simon Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. She research is in the area of artificial intelligence with focus on planning, control learning, and execution for single and multi-robot teams. Her algorithms address uncertain, dynamic, and adversarial environments. Veloso has developed teams of robot soccer agents, which have been RoboCup world champions several times. She is the president-elect of the International RoboCup Federation and a fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. She is an international expert in multi-agent systems and the author of the book Planning And Learning By Analogical Reasoning.

Veloso has a long research experience of classic deterministic planning by analogy transfer, and more recently she has developed probabilistic plan and policy reuse algorithms. Veloso also investigates learning approaches to a variety of control problems, including the performance optimization of algorithm implementations, and plan recognition in complex data sets.

Veloso holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon, and M.Sc. and B.S. degrees, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico.

Eric P. Xing is a Professor of Computer Science, in the Machine Learning Department, Language Technology Institute and the Computer Science Department. His interests lie in the development of machine learning and statistical methodology; especially for solving problems involving automated learning, reasoning, and decision-making in high-dimensional, multimodal, and dynamic possible worlds; and for building quantitative models and predictive understandings of the evolutionary mechanism, regulatory circuitry, and developmental processes of biological systems.

He holds a B.S. in both Physics and Biology from Tsinghua University, a M.Sc. in Computer Science from Rutgers University, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley.
