Two CMU Portugal Alumni joined Professor Takeo Kanade in Tokyo

The meeting between Dual Degree Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) PhD graduate, José Jerónimo Rodrigues and his Ph.D. Supervisor Takeo Kanade is the example of the lasting relationships created under the CMU Portugal Program.

The reunion also included the presence of Jayakorn Vongkulbhisal, who was Jerónimo´s colleague in the Dual Degree PhD in ECE and who now works as research scientist at IBM Research-Tokyo.

Since 2014, Jerónimo has worked as a Technical Lead at Mujin Co., an intelligent robot controller company based out of Tokyo in Japan, founded in 2011. He was the company’s first specialist in computer vision, one of the fundamental pillars of the company. Jerónimo kept in touch with Takeo Kanade, who is considered the “father of Computer Vision” and was his mentor in this field during the whole Ph.D. process.

The reunion between student and supervisor also included the presence of Jayakorn Vongkulbhisal, who was Jerónimo´s colleague in the Dual Degree PhD in ECE and who now works as research scientist at IBM Research-Tokyo.

Diankov Rosen, Mujin Co. co- founder and Carnegie Mellon University graduate, developed motion planning Artificial Intelligence technology that is applied to more than 1,000 robots around the world. Mujin provides high value-added automation solutions to make robots more intelligent and easier to use. Founded as an intelligent robot controller developer and manufacturer, Mujin has led to an expansion in the robot market.
